What is Lifestyle Photography?
I feel like there is not just one true explanation for what lifestyle photography is. However I’m here to tell you what it means to me and how I interpret it.
So let’s break it down
In photography there are so many different genres and styles. But more specifically there are three very clear categories: Traditional, Lifestyle and Documentary.
Traditional
Traditional photography is very posed and orchestrated - everyone standing exactly how the photographer has suggested and all looking at the camera smiling. For me this is too structured and doesn’t show enough personality and emotion but can be great for things like corporate headshots.
Documentary
On the opposite end of the scale would be documentary. This genre of photography has a very fly on the wall approach without any direction or input at all. This is perfect for situations like birth photography or journalism, however it’s not so great for family photography as it can leave people feeling awkward and like they don’t know what they should be doing.
Lifestyle
Then we have lifestyle photography which I see as a perfect mix of both and right in the middle. Lifestyle photography is the best of both worlds to capture personality, movement, and warmth. Families can feel comfortable playing games with their kids or following a prompt from the photographer while we getting some beautiful natural photographs. It’s effortless and beautiful and I love it.
The aim in all of my sessions is to make my families feel relaxed and comfortable. It’s about connecting with their family, having fun with their kids and capturing it all so they have some beautiful memories to look back on in the decades to come. When was the last time you had your photos taken? Was it easy and fun? Did you feel comfortable and beautiful?
